The practice of estate planning is undergoing a change. With the high estate tax exemption, planning has become more income tax driven. In addition, there’s a great focus on business succession planning, with the aging of baby boomers and businesses being passed down. There’s been a rise of elder law fraud and estate litigations as more elderly people have Alzheimers and other weakened conditions. How can estate-planning practitioners help their clients?
As a result of these changes and others, practitioners will need to be more knowledgeable and better trained in non-tax areas (elder issues, family dynamics, succession planning, guardianships, psychology, business planning). It’s also more important than ever that estate planning professionals work in teams (e.g., attorney, accountant, insurance, etc.) to make sure all bases are covered.
