Bio

Michael J. Schaffer is a Partner in the firm’s Business & Real Estate Taxation, Trusts & Estates, Tax Exempt Organizations and Private Wealth & Taxation Practice Groups. Prior to joining the firm, Michael worked as a Manager in the Personal Financial Practice KPMG Peat Marwick, LLP focusing on Estate Tax. Prior to that he worked as a trusts and estates associate for a New York City law firm. In addition to being an attorney, he is also a licensed CPA and uses his skill and experience in both disciplines to provide his clients with a broad professional perspective.

Michael has generated significant estate and tax savings for his clients to advance their succession planning, personal and business goals. He uses various estate planning strategies such as family partnerships, preferred partnerships, grantor trusts, dynasty trusts, offshore trusts, charitable trusts and foundations, and various types of sophisticated wills to accomplish client goals. He has advised numerous high net worth individuals including CEO’s, executives of Fortune 500 companies, celebrities and real estate investors.

Michael has published articles in the New York CPA Journal and in Tax Hotline. He has also published a treatise on the Protocol (dealing with taxes imposed by reason of death) to the U.S. – Canada Income Tax Treaty. In addition, he lectures throughout the country on various estate and trust topics such as wills, domestic and foreign trusts, advanced estate planning, charitable planning, family partnerships and income taxation of estates and trusts. He has also been a guest lecturer at both the Hofstra University and St. John’s University Schools of Law.
